Common startup grant paths
Early stage founders should look beyond lists labeled startup grants. Relevant opportunities may be described as innovation challenges, pitch competitions, research awards, accelerators, fellowships or economic development programs.

Show that the idea can become a business
Funders need enough evidence to believe the team can execute. Explain the customer need, market, business model, current progress and next milestone. Early evidence can include interviews, pilot results, letters of interest, prototypes or initial sales.
Build a milestone budget
Tie each expense to a defined result. Instead of asking for money to grow, show what will be purchased, completed, tested or launched and when. Make sure the requested expenses are allowed by the program.
